Lent 2010: Receive the Gift of Sabbath

Dear Mathew,

Lent-2010: Receive the Gift of Sabbath is an all-church initiative for this Lenten season — from February 17th – April 4th, 2010. We have been exploring Sabbath for years on an individual level but have come to realize our need for corporate, community support. For this reason, we are asking that you choose one of two time periods: from 6 pm Saturday night to 6 pm Sunday night, or from 6 pm Friday night to 6 pm Saturday night in which to begin keeping Sabbath. We are asking that you start and end by lighting a candle, knowing that several hundred of your fellow New Lifer’s are doing the same thing.
Sabbath-keeping, i.e. taking a 24-hour period each week to stop, rest, delight, and contemplate God, is perhaps one of the most counter-cultural spiritual formation disciplines today. It is one of God’s great gifts to us as His people, guiding us to rest in His love and grace.

Lent2010 Sabbath

We have a booklet written by Pete Scazzero, audio of messages, video of personal testimonies, some Frequently Asked Questions about the Sabbath and more on our website for free! There are also great books and materials at discounted rates available at our book table (located in the back of the Sanctuary after all 3 services) throughout this Lenten Season.

Sabbath, for the people of Israel, was always a corporate discipline before it was personal. The community as a whole stopped, rested and delighted in God. My prayer is that we might taste the joy God intended by giving us such a gift. I am excited about the response this past Sunday in our worship services. Check out the many resources available to help you both online and at our book table on Sundays. See this as an exploration time, a time of trial and error, an opportunity to build healthy traditions into your life. And may God slow you down this Lent, that you might really see His goodness and miracles all around you.

With much love,

Pete Scazzero
New Life Fellowship

reconciliationLed by Pastor Pete Scazzero and Dr. Soong Chan Rah, this seminar is for the purpose of creating a context for safe dialogue in which we deepen our understanding of the complexity and depth of bridging racial and cultural barriers within our communities. We also hope to provide practical, do-able steps for each person to take to make reconciliation a reality through teaching, panel and small group discussions. The event will be from 10am-1pm. Cost is $10 per person. Dr. Soong-Chan Rah is an Associate Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL and the author of The Next Evangelicalism: Freeing the Church from Western Cultural Captivity.
