Advent & the Discipline of Slowing

Advent CandleGreetings!

God intends that Advent help us understand and prepare for the true meaning of Christmas. Our whole life is to be an “advent,” that is, a waiting for Jesus’coming. He has come historically. Yes. But He is coming to you continually and will come again to bring all history to a glorious conclusion.  Yet I, along with you, experience the tension of increased commitments and less available time during this time of year. Enjoying the presence of God becomes more challenging, not less.
Adele Calhoun, in her book, Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices That Transform Us (IVP), introduces a creative, unique spiritual practice called slowing. This includes things like: intentionally driving in the slow lane, choosing the longest line at the store, sitting longer over a meal, or taking a longer shower. “Slowing,” she writes, “is a way to counter our culture’s mandate to tend to the bottom line, to move it or lose it, to constantly be on the go. It is a way we honor our limits and the fact that God is found in the present moment.”
Take a few minutes now to practice this discipline by pondering how God may be inviting you to slow down in the next few days. And may you experience God’s reality in and around you this Christmas.

Cherish this Advent Season and we hope you’ll join us at these upcoming events.

With much love
,
